CLEVELAND - An inmate at the White County Detention Center who tried to hang himself last week has died.

According to an obituary notice from Alexander Funeral Home in Cleveland, 31-year-old Jason Grimsley died Thursday. Grimsley had been hospitalized since Tuesday night, when he tried to hang himself in a jail cell, according to White County Chief Deputy Bob Ingram.

At the time of the incident, Ingram said Grimsley had been accounted for at 6:18 p.m. Tuesday, but was missing during a head count at 6:36 p.m.

Ingram said Grimsley was serving time for theft and probation violation at the time.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation had been called in last week to investigate.
