Tractor-trailer strikes historic courthouse wall

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio
CLEVELAND - No one was injured Tuesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer truck collided with the Historic White County Courthouse wall on the Cleveland Square.

According to the accident report from the Cleveland Police Department, the accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. and involved one vehicle: a tractor-trailer.

The driver, identified as Richard Carette of Braselton, was heading south, the report states. Carette told officers a black truck pulled out in front of him and he hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. The truck ran through a concrete curb, then across another roadway, over another curb, ending at a rest after striking the courthouse wall.

White County Historical Society spokeswoman Judy Lovell said the truck crashed through the 150-year-old water pump, some shrubbery, a park bench, and into the rock wall.

The accident reports witnesses stated that they did not see a black truck pull out in front of the driver of the tractor-trailer.

The driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions and failure to maintain lane.
