First UI claims down 10 pct. in Ga., up sharply in Gainesville

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) says first-time claims for unemployment insurance (UI) in Georgia declined 10.2 percent last month compared to April 2012. But Gainesville led the state in the percentage of new claims that were filed.

Statewide, there were 4,848 fewer claims submitted compared to a year ago. In Gainesville, the increase was 125.3 percent (or a net of 821).

In explaining the Gainesville figures, GDOL statisticians said most of the increase is tied to claims filed by workers in the administrative and support and construction industries.

Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Athens led the state in the percentage of claims that decreased, 21.6 percent; the decrease in metro Atlanta was 13.7 percent.

In addition to Gainesville, five other metropolitan areas in Georgia showed an increase in UI claims last month: Augusta, Hinesville, Valdosta, Savannah and Albany.
