UNG Mathematics Tournament begins Sat. on Gainesville campus

By Staff
DAHLONEGA - Featuring 12 colleges and universities and more than 175 students, the University of North Georgia (ung) Mathematics Tournament will be held this Saturday on the school's Gainesville campus.

Building on the prior 18 Gainesville State College Mathematics Tournaments, the UNG tournament will feature problems from mathematical subjects such as algebra, statistics, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.

Delbert Greear, assistant professor of mathematics at UNG and a coordinator of the event, is looking forward to the tournament.

"The entire math division from the Gainesville and Oconee campuses has worked on this for years," Greear said. "This year we anticipate more students than ever, coming from as far away as central Mississippi and coastal North Carolina to try their hand at some challenging math problems."

Greear said the tournament was organized and sponsored by the Student Math Club, and that the event requires the combined efforts of the entire math faculty on the Gainesville and Oconee campuses to put forth a new set of questions each year, organize the tournament, score the contests, and award the prizes.

"So far it has been a great success," Greear said. "We have schools that have been bringing teams to this tournament for almost two decades."

The event will include individual and team competition, with cash prizes for the top five individuals and gift certificates for the top four teams. There will also be separate prizes provided for top-placing UNG students.

Jerry Graveman, associate professor of mathematics and a coordinator of the tournament, said he expects the 2013 event to be the biggest and best yet.

"This tournament began in 1995 after several faculty members attended an AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) conference featuring a session on hosting math tournaments," Graveman said. "Soon after, faculty members Christy Yeager, Deborah Bolding, and Kathy Hunt gave a presentation to the Department of Mathematics on hosting a tournament, and in that first tournament six colleges attended."

The states, schools, and campuses that will be represented this year are:

North Carolina: Cape Fear Community College, Catawba Valley Community College, Gaston College, Mitchell Community College, Wake Technical Community College, and Durham Technical Community College

Georgia: University of North Georgia, Georgia Perimeter College (GPC)-Clarkston, GPC-Dunwoody, GPC-Decatur, Georgia Military College-Madison, and Middle Georgia College

Mississippi: Holmes Community College

Alabama: Shelton State Community College

Florida: Tallahassee Community College
