'Green Technologies' training begins for some high schoolers

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - Bright and early at 7:30 Thursday, the Habitat High class from Hall County Schools will embark on quite possibly a state "first" in the form of a Green Technologies Training Program (GTTP) designed and led by Lanier Technical College. This is part of a larger project of EnviroShare, Hall County's Environmental Management System.

This new program focuses on energy education and green technology and is made possible through grant funds awarded to Hall County Government.

Students enrolled in Hall County Schools' Habitat High program will be the first to participate in the program. They will report to Featherbone Communiversity Thursday for a full day of training on alternative energy and energy efficiency. The class will be held at Lanier Technical College's weatherization "test house," which is located inside the College's Manufacturing Development Center area at Featherbone Communiversity. Students from Johnson, West Hall, Flowery Branch and Chestatee high schools' Construction programs will also be participating in the training program over the course of the next two months.

As envisioned, this educational component will be focused toward workforce development by preparing students for the future and green technology, while focusing on solar resources offered in the region. The program is designed to include intensive, hands-on training. There will also be a "train the trainer" component of the program, as Habitat High, Construction instructors, and Elachee Nature Science Center instructors will attend the sessions as well.

Hall County Government was the lead applicant for the Appalachian Regional Commission grant, which provided nearly $55,000 in federal funds to Hall County's Community Based Energy Training and Demonstration Program. The green technologies training at Featherbone Communiversity is a part of that overall program.

Hall County's partners in the project include Elachee, Hall County Schools, Lanier Technical College and ZF Wind Power. It is a project of EnviroShare, Hall County's Environmental Management System, which works via collaboration and partnerships. EnviroShare's mission is: "Engaging our community and inspiring environmental action to create a greener footprint and healthier economy through research and education."
