Hall school officials to form safety committee

GAINESVILLE - Hall County school officials are moving forward with a new committee centered on school safety.

System superintendent Will Schofield said the school board agreed to start forming the committee Monday night.

"Whose sole purpose would be to continually review safety and emergency preparedness procedures within our school district, making recommendations and seeking expert opinions," Schofield said.

While Schofield said staff members are always making changes and improvements in safety procedures behind the scenes, he said the board and officials felt it was time for a formal committee.

It's expected to include school officials, local law enforcement, and retired military.

"We are blessed in this area to have some retired military personnel who have spent a lifetime protecting installations and people, both in this country and around the world," Schofield said.

The committee will also include parents and possibly some students.

"Individuals in the schools have a perspective that those of us that don't spend seven hours a day in those buildings just can't replicate," Schofield said.

He said officials will start looking at individuals to make up the board. Once formed, he said the first order of business will be to look at safety procedures already in place.
