MCCAYSVILLE - After a search that lasted 12 hours, authorities have found a Fannin County man who is accused of stabbing his girlfriend and then fleeing with the couple's two young children.
In a press release, Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby said Ellis James Weatherspoon, 47, had been on the run since just after 9:30 Tuesday night.
Fannin County 911 dispatchers said they received a call at 9:36 p.m. about an aggravated assault and stabbing at 537 E. Tennessee Avenue in McCaysville. When emergency units arrived, they found a woman who apparently had been stabbed. She was taken to Erlanger Medical Center for treatment, and she remains hospitalized in stable condition. Kirby did not release her name.
Weatherspoon is the victim's boyfriend and the biological father of the couple's two children, ages 1 and 6, according to the press statement.
Kirby said a number of agencies assisted in a search of the county that last throughout the night. He said Weatherspoon was found at 9:23 a.m. Wednesday at
a location off of Blue Ridge Drive in McCaysville.
The sheriff said both children were unharmed.
Kirby did not say what might have lead to the incident, nor did he say what charges Weatherspoon is facing.
In addition to Fannin County Shweriff's authorities and the McCaysville Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia State Patrol, Gilmer County Sheriff's Office, Appalachian District Attorney's Office and the US Forestry Service assisted with the overnight search.
