Dawson Co. authorities investigate attempted package thefts

By Alyson Shields Reporter
DAWSONVILLE - Christmas is just around the corner, which mean purchases from Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are turning up on doorsteps. In Dawson County, thieves are attempting to help themselves to those packages left on doorsteps.

Dawson County Sheriff's Major Tony Wooten said that over the weekend, a resident noticed a black sedan parked across the street from her house. The resident said the car was occupied by three black men, one of whom approached her house after a delivery truck dropped off a package.

"At that point she feels like they were trying to find out if anybody was home, maybe they were going to take the package if it had been left unattended," said Wooten.

Wooten said the man fled once he realized the resident was home. He said this wasn't the first incident either. "We're thankful for the fact that we've gotten these tips. but several of the tips we've gotten last week have come in several days after they happened," said Wooten. "Call us in. There's nothing too small for us to check out."

Wooten said while the vehicle and suspect descriptions are similar to those in a Forsyth County case last week in which a woman gained access to a home by claiming to be a Bible salesperson, authorities do not think the cases are related.
