Golden leads Georgia Tech past Georgia

By The Associated Press
ATHENS -- Trae Golden scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer to cap Georgia Tech's 12-2 run to open the second half, and the Yellow Jackets beat Georgia 80-71 on Friday night for their third straight win in the state rivalry.

Golden's 3-pointer gave Georgia Tech a 55-40 lead less than 4 minutes into the second half. The Yellow Jackets led only 43-38 at halftime.

Georgia Tech kept the lead in double figures most of the second half.

Senior center Daniel Miller had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Georgia Tech (3-0), which dominated play inside.

Georgia Tech has three straight wins in the series for the first time since 1992-94, including two straight wins in Athens. The Yellow Jackets won in Athens two years ago for the first time since 1976.

Charles Mann led Georgia (1-1) with a career-high 24 points. Mann made each of his four 3-point attempts.

Miller and forward Kammeon Holsey, who had 10 points and 12 rebounds, helped Georgia Tech take a 15-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Bulldogs 40-28 in the paint and held an overall 49-40 advantage in rebounds.

Marcus Georges-Hunt had 11 points for Georgia Tech.

Kenny Gaines had 13 points for the Bulldogs. No other Georgia player scored in double figures.

Golden, a senior transfer from Tennessee, has provided valuable experience to Georgia Tech's backcourt. Golden started 58 of his 96 games in three seasons at Tennessee.

Golden needed no introduction to Georgia, which was a Southeastern Conference rival in his three seasons at Tennessee.

Golden had less success at Georgia during his time at Tennessee. He made only 1 of 10 shots for four points in a 78-68 loss at Georgia on March 2, 2013, and he had 16 points for the Vols in a 57-53 loss at Georgia on Jan. 18, 2012. He did not score in a win in 2011.

Georgia sophomore forward Brandon Morris was held out for the second straight game for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. Morris started 20 games as a freshman and was a projected starter this season.
