Woerner leads Rabun past Union in key 8-AA matchup

By staff reports
BLAIRSVILLE -- Charlie Woerner ran for 241 yards and scored four times to lead Rabun County to a 42-18 win over Union County Friday night in a crucial Region 8-AA game for both teams.

Woerner also caught two passes for another 53 yards and intercepted a pass on defense and returned that 53 yards to set up another touchdown.

The Wildcats (6-2, 3-2 Region 8-AA) snapped a two-game losing streak and all but secured a playoff spot with the win. Union County (5-3, 3-2) needs just one win to assure itself of a playoff spot. Both teams hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Riverside Military Academy.

Rabun County led first 6-0 on a 3-yard TD run by Woerner midway through the first quarter. Union County would respond with a field goal, a safety, and a touchdown on a 38-yard TD pass from Joseph Mancuso to Jacob Rogers to take an 11-6 lead early in the second quarter.

The Wildcats would retake the for good 14-11 late in the second quarter on a 19-yard TD run by Woerner and a two-point conversion. Rabun County would blow the game open in the third quarter scoring a pair of touchdowns in less than two minutes, highlighted by a 73-yard pass from Hunter Sims to Jordan Oliver for a 28-11 lead.

Mancuso and Rogers would strike again for Union County with a 73-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 28-21 late in the third quarter. That's as close as they would get. Sims would cap the wild third quarter for Rabun County with a 5-yard TD run for a 35-18 lead.

Woerner would provide the only scoring in the fourth quarter with a 62-yard TD run to push the lead back to 42-18.

Mancuso finished with 235 yards passing for Union County. Rogers finished with 123 yards receiving on six catches.
