Usher, Mercer dominate Carnegie-Mellon 54-21

By staff reports
MACON -- Payton Usher led the way as Mercer dominated the running game on both sides of the ball to secure a 54-21 blowout victory over Carnegie-Mellon Saturday.

Usher needed only seven carries to lock up his fourth 100-yard game of the year. He finished with 115 yards and sat out the entire second half.

The Bears (6-1) led 30-0 in the first half after scoring on their first five drives while holding the Tartans without a first down on their first five possessions.

Mercer rushed for five touchdowns and outgained Carnegie-Mellon on the ground 391-100.

JT Palmer had his first game with multiple touchdowns since the Bears' season opener. He finished with five receptions for 51 yards and two touchdowns.

Tim Swanson provided a bright spot for the Tartans (3-4) with a 76-yard touchdown reception. Carnegie-Mellon was without starting quarterback Rob Kalkstein who failed a concussion test before the game.
