Boys basketball: Johnson rolls over rival West Hall

OAKWOOD -- The Johnson boys basketball team won its seventh straight game holding off rival West Hall 75-59 Saturday night.

The Knights jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and would take a 36-29 lead into halftime after West Hall's Hunter Atkinson hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from just across halfcourt.

Johnson took full control of the game in the third quarter outscoring the Spartans 21-12 to take a 57-41 lead.

Johnson (17-4) were paced by Montrell McKenzie with 20 points, 15 in the 2nd half), 13 rebounds, and four blocks to record his 20th double-double of the season. Sophomore Ty Cockfield had 19 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, Carter Cagle added 12 points and six rebounds, and James Hodges scored 11 points and had eight rebounds for the Knights.

West Hall (9-10) was led by Hunter Atkinson with 19 points, but just four after halftime. Cameran Jacques added 13 for the Spartans.

Johnson is back in action in 8-AAAA play on Tuesday at Monroe Area.

West Hall returns to action in 7-AAA on Tuesday traveling to East Hall.
