BUFORD - Starting next month, members of the newly organized Lake Lanier Legislative Caucus will be visiting each county that borders Lanier to hear concerns from citizens.
State Senator Butch Miller of Gainesville was one of 26 who attended an organizational meeting Tuesday afternoon at the Buford Community Center.
Miller said safety on Lanier has been a growing concern over the summer, specifically because of two deadly boating accidents. One of those boat crashes killed Buford brothers Jake and Griffin Prince. The other involved a watercraft striking an innertube and killing a boy from the Atlanta area, Kile Glover.
He said lawmakers have to be cautious with legislation about lake safety because state laws can't be specific to Lake Lanier alone.
"So, whereas we might have a water safety problem on Lake Lanier as a result of the volume of people on the lake, other lakes might not appreciate the need or appreciate the same legislation," Miller said.
And, while safety is an issue for Lanier, Miller said there are other long-time concerns that likely will be revisited at upcoming county meetings.
"Concern has always been water access and water volume and lake level," he said.
The first meeting will be held next month in Hall County, although Miller said a specific date has not yet been set.
