Developer arrested in Gwinnett Co. bribery scheme

LAWRENCEVILLE - A developer charged Wednesday with giving a $30,000 bribe in exchange for a former Gwinnett County Commissioner's vote in favor of a solid waste transfer station appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Court judge.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Mark Gary paid Shirley Lasseter in chips from an out-of-state gambling casino and she, in turn, voted in favor of the transfer station in 2009.

Gary's arrest occurred on the same day Lasseter, her son John Fanning and Hall County businessman Carl "Skip" Cain are set to be sentenced in connection with a bribery scheme.

The three have been cooperating with federal prosecutors and the charges against Gary may have stemmed from the information one or all of the defendants provided to federal authorities.
