Georgia AG Olens to speak at GOP convention

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) Georgia's attorney general will address participants at the upcoming Republican National Convention.

Attorney General Sam Olens was among the few high-profile political figures in the state to endorse Mitt Romney in the presidential primary. Many other Republicans had thrown their support to former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The most recent list of speakers scheduled for the convention was released Wednesday.

So far, Olens is the only Georgian scheduled to speak at the convention. It's scheduled for Aug. 27-30 in Tampa, Fla.

Olens became an adviser to Romney on the Supreme Court case involving the 2010 health care law, as he was one of several state attorneys general to file suit against the federal government.

Olens plans to focus his remarks on the health care law and "other areas where there's a large federal overreach inconsistent with the Constitution," he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Romney has vowed he will move to repeal the law if elected.

"We look forward to a Romney administration working with state attorneys general, upholding the principle of federalism," Olens told The Marietta Daily Journal.

Kennesaw State University professor Kerwin Swint said the speaking slot is "a pretty big deal."

"Olens has turned some heads in the Republican Party," Swint said. "He can be relied upon for ideas, for strategy, and it helps the Georgia GOP get in the limelight. It's great for him personally and for the state party."

He was elected Georgia's attorney general in 2010.
