Cleveland Bypass open house set

CLEVELAND - Georgia highway officials are moving ahead with plans for phase one of the Cleveland Bypass project by holding an open house on the effort next week.

It's scheduled next Tuesday night, April 24, at White County High School.

Teri Pope with the Georgia Department of Transportation said officials hope to begin accepting bids for the phase this Friday.

"If we get a good bid on that project and award it to a contractor in early May, we expect to begin construction on that section of the bypass this Summer," Pope said.

The phase runs from U.S. 129/S.R. 11 at Hope Drive, around the west side of Cleveland to S.R. 115.

Pope said officials looked at about 11 different alignments for the project, which she says has been around for a while.

"We want to let the community know how the project has progressed, how it's broken into three phases now and what's happening soonest on that phase 1 project," Pope said.

The drop-in open house is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. April 24. It's in the school's cafeteria. White County High School is located on U.S. 129/S.R. 11 in Cleveland.

Following the open house, plans and handouts can be viewed at the Georgia DOT Area Office located at 942 Albert Reid Road in Cleveland or at the Georgia DOT District Office located at 2505 Athens Highway in Gainesville.

The plans will also be available on the DOT website after the open house. On the home page choose "Information Center" then Public Outreach" and select the project's county and choose "Go". A list of active DOT projects in that county will appear. Select the project to view.
