Freeze could pose problems for flowering plants

By The Associated Press, Georgia News Network
ATLANTA - Forecasters said a freeze warning will soon be in effect as temperatures are expected to plunge into the mid-20s for much of Georgia, threatening many of the plants which have already started to bloom.

"For your fruit crops, especially fruit trees like peaches and plumbs and nectarines and things like that, that are starting to bloom early, obviously that can have a major impact on those trees and shrubs," Bartow County Extension Agent Paul Pugliese said.

"It will potentially kill some of those flower buds that are starting to open at this point, and that's going to have a direct impact on your crop." Pugliese said.

The National Weather Service says the freeze warning will be in effect from 9 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

It covers a large part of the state, and includes all of metro Atlanta and cities including Blairsville, Dalton, Rome, Gainesville, Athens, Dublin, Macon and LaGrange.
