NGTC crosses another RN hurdle

CLARKESVILLE - North Georgia Technical College officials have passed another hurdle in their effort to offer a Registered Nurse program.

The school recently gained approval from both the Technical College System of Georgia Board of Directors and the Georgia State Board of Nursing to begin developing the associate's degree program.

"That's not a final approval, but is an approval to move forward with the development of the program. That's a very big step," said NGTC President Steve Dougherty.

The next approvals come down the road from the same state nursing board. One is required to begin accepting students, the other is a follow-up after the first class of students.

Dougherty confirmed that nursing continues to be a needed career path.

"We've had a demand from our healthcare providers and from our former LPN students for this program."

If all goes as planned, the first class of RN students will begin in Fall of 2013.

Dougherty said funding for start-up costs will be provided through a $2.5 million workforce development grant. It was announced last Fall by the U.S. Department of Labor.
