Demolition of Green St. Pool on GCC agenda

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville City Council (GCC) will consider funding for the demolition of Green Street Pool during a work session Thursday.

The pool, which was built in 1930 and was once a popular summertime gathering place, was closed several years ago because of the cost of needed repairs and the cost of keeping it open each summer. (See earlier stories. Links below.)

In addition to an appropriation resolution for funding for the demolition of the pool, the council will consider funding for some renovations at Wessell Park.

Also on Thursday's agenda are two pawnshop applications, one from A-1 Fast Cash at 1010A Jesse Jewell Parkway, and the other from Double Deuce Pawn and Gun LLC at 365 Shallowford Road, Suite C. They come on the heels of recent city council action aimed at more closely regulating pawnshops and their employees and making it easier for police to trace stolen merchandise that might wind up in pawnshops.

The council will also be briefed on its organizational meeting which will be held next Tuesday. Local governmental bodies in Georgia typically take care of a number of housekeeping matters during their first regular meeting each new year - such as staff appointments, etc. - and others in the area will be doing the same thing over the next week or so.
