Firefighters rescue dogs in Barrow County

WINDER - A Barrow County family has been displaced by fire, but can credit the fire department with rescuing their dogs. Barrow County firefighters responded to the house fire in the 900 block of Justin Drive Thursday afternoon.

"Upon arrival of firefighters, smoke was showing throughout the home with flames visible in the kitchen area of the home," Barrow County Fire Lt. Scott Dakin said.

Dakin said firefighters were able to rescue the dogs from the smoke-filled house around 4:46 p.m.

One dog was having trouble breathing.

"Firefighters and deputy sheriffs on the scene started treating that patient with oxygen through a specially-designed mask that is actually set up for canines," Dakin said.

"Both dogs are doing fine and were licking faces out on the scene at the time," Dakin said.

First responders contained the blaze, but smoke damage resulted in two adults being displaced. The American Red Cross responded to help them.

Investigators are looking for the cause of the blaze.
