Two rowing teams complete marathon row across Lake Lanier

GAINESVILLE - Revolution Junior Rowing (RJR) and the North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU) Rowing Team RECENTLY completed a marathon trek on Lake Lanier from Gainesville to Buford Dam.

It was the final event of the fall season for both teams and was meant to raise awareness for both teams who practice out of the American Legion Post on Riverside Drive.

RJR officials says Revolution Junior Rowing is Lake Lanier's most awarded junior rowing team and that the team has medaled each time it has competed in the Southeast Regional Youth Regatta, which is the championship event for the southeast and the qualifier for the Youth National Championship. The NGCSU Rowing Team is still in its infancy, having started last spring.

Members from each organization teamed up in boats to complete the row to the dam. RJR officials say although the row was not meant to be a race, the competitive nature of the athletes caused some boats to pull away from others during the trek across Lanier. The row took less than four hours to complete.

The NGCSU Rowing Team wants present and future college students to know that there is an opportunity to participate in the sport if they come to school at North Georgia. Revolution Junior Rowing is also looking for new members, particulary from Hall and Gwinnett counties.

All in all, officials say, they had more than 20 rowers participate, ranging in age from 14 to 22.
