Eagles rally for first win of the season

By staff reports
SOCIAL CIRCLE -- Borrowing from the Miami Dolphins playbook, Riverside Military Academy pulled off a nifty hook-and-lateral for a touchdown late in the game to rally for a 35-34 Region 8-AA win over Social Circle Friday night for the Eagles first win of the season.

Trailing 34-27 with just over three minutes left and facing a fourth-and-18 from the Indians 44, quarterback Colin Pettell connected with J.J. McCalston, who then lateraled to Elijah Holifield and raced in for thee 44-yard score. Holifield then converted the two-point try to give the Eagles (1-6, 1-4 in region) the lead.

The Riverside defense then stopped Social Circle on downs and ran out the clock.

"It feels great to get that first win," Riverside coach Gary Downs said. "It's been a long time coming. The kids have been doing everything we ask and I feel good for them."

The Eagles trailed most of the game and rallied fro an early 14-0 deficit in the first quarter.

Riverside continued to show it can put up big offensive numbers. The Eagles finished with over 400 yards of offense for the fourth game this season, including 374 yards rushing.

Adriane Humphrey had 172 yards and two touchdowns and Holifield finished with 132 yards and one rushing touchdown to pace Riverside.

John McFarland also had one touchdown for Riverside blocking a punt and then running it in for a touchdown.
