Nighthawks selected as mascot for University of North Georgia

As North Georgia College and State University and Gainesville State College continue to work towards an official consolidation as the University of North Georgia, students have selected Nighthawks as the mascot.

"By selecting a new mascot to promote athletics and school spirit, we are taking an important step to building community as the University of North Georgia," University President Bonita Jacobs said.

The three finalists were the Golden Eagles, Nighthawks or Warriors. More than 6,300 students, about 42 percent of the combined student body, took park in an online survey. Nighthawks was the clear selection, with 51 percent.

"I am very pleased that such a large number of students from each institution participated in the selection process. Their response clearly demonstrates their interest in selecting the new mascot," Jacobs said.

The appearance of the mascot Nighthawk is expected to be unveiled in January, when the University System of Georgia Board of Regents gives official authorization to consolidate the two schools.

While NGCSU Athletic Director Lindsay Reeves said she'll miss current mascot, the Saints, she understands the move.

"I understand that we need to bring our two universities together in such a way that this will help unite them together."

While not set in stone, Reeves said she believes the school colors will be blue, white and gold.
