MONROE -- Stephens County couldn't hold on to an early lead on Friday night, as Monroe Area scored two unanswered touchdowns to pull out a 21-17 victory in Monroe.

The victory kept the Purple Hurricanes undefeated and tied for first place in Region 8-AAAA with Chestatee.

The Purple Hurricanes gashed Stephens County (4-2, 1-2 Region 8-AAAA) for 248 yards rushing, including 126 yards for quarterback Stanton Truitt. Kawon Brooks also carried for 92 yards and a score, including the game-sealing jaunt of 24 yards in the fourth quarter.

The Indians rolled up 289 yards of offense, including 91 yards rushing and a score for Chaz Thornton, who put the Indians ahead 17-7 just before halftime.

Yet three second half turnovers and a missed field goal proved too costly for Stephens, who also got 205 yards passing, including over 150 for quarterback Dionte Mayfield.

The Indians will look to bounce back next week at Madison County.
