Deshaun Watson has had better games this season -- from a numbers standpoint.

But when it came to absolutely having to make plays, Watson stood tall on Friday, as the Red Elephants pulled away from a determined Cedar Shoals, 42-23 in Athens. And the numbers weren't too bad either.

Leading just 28-23 in the second half, Watson authored two unanswered scoring drives -- tallying his fifth and sixth touchdowns of the contest to help Gainesville seal its fifth straight victory of 2012.

The junior also compiled 234 yards passing with three touchdowns, while also running for 118 yards three scores.

It is the kind of performance that has become almost commonplace for Watson -- who has been named Gainesville Jaycees Player of the Week for his efforts in the defeat of the Jaguars.

Access North Georgia sports editor Morgan Lee recently caught up with Watson to talk about Friday's win, the Red Elephants' offense this season and games just on the horizon.

Watson has been a special talent from the moment he started his first game as a freshman for the Red Elephants, and he has shown tremendous improvement in each season. That has proven true again this campaign, as the junior has taken more control of Gainesville's spread offense.

Watson also showed he can excel in the face of adversity, leading the Red Elephants to a 19-15 win at Buford despite throwing four interceptions. Since then he has been almost untouchable, not giving up a single turnover while helping Gainesville to a dominating start in its new Region 8-AAAAA schedule.

The Red Elephants (5-1, 4-0 Region 8-AAAAA) face another road test this week at Salem.

Each week this football season the Jaycees will team with Jacobs Media to present a Player of the Week award. At the end of the season, the Jaycees will also present a Player of the Year award, as well as name a recipient of a $2,500 scholarship to the most deserving senior.
