Hawkins to run for Ga. House of Representatives

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - Former State Senator Lee Hawkins announced his candidacy for the Georgia House of Representatives District 27 seat Friday.

The seat is presently held by Representative Doug Collins, who will be leaving after the 2012 session to run for Congress.

The 27th District covers most of north Hall County and parts of White and Forsyth counties.

"I am excited to once again have the opportunity to represent the people of this district," Hawkins said in a statement. "We all know that small businesses create and provide the majority of jobs in this country. The health of our economy is also directly dependent upon these businesses. I have supported and will continue to support legislation that represents our conservative values and fiscal responsibility by promoting spending cuts rather than tax increases."

Hawkins ran unsuccessfully last year in a GOP primary against U.S. Rep. Tom Graves for the Congressional seat vacated by Gov. Nathan Deal when he decided to join the race for governor.

Hawkins was elected to the state Senate in 2006.
