MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Attorneys for civil rights groups and for the U.S. Justice Department have asked a federal appeals court not to delay hearing arguments concerning the Alabama immigration law.
Attorneys for the states of Alabama and Georgia last week asked the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to delay hearing arguments over the two states immigration laws until the U.S. Supreme Court has heard a case involving Arizona's similar law cracking down on illegal immigrants. The Justice Department and attorneys for 36 groups seeking to stop Alabama's immigration law on Monday filed a motion with the appeals court asking that there be no delay.
Southern Poverty Law Center legal director Mary Bauer said the groups oppose any action that will allow enforcement of the Alabama law to continue.
