Ga.lawyer to meet with Treasury about dollar coins

By The Associated Press
ST. MARYS - A south Georgia lawyer's campaign to encourage people, banks and merchants to circulate dollar coins has attracted the attention of the U.S. Treasury.

The department has invited Charlie Smith to a meeting in Washington to discuss his effort. He is scheduled to meet with U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios and other representatives from a coalition supporting dollar coins in September.

Smith says he has circulated more than 20,000 of the coins since he started his campaign this year. He wants Camden County to lead the nation in using the coins instead of dollar bills.

He says using the coins could save the federal government $500 million a year.
The coins are cheaper to produce, have a longer life span and are recyclable.
