GAINESVILLE-Seven students recently completed the Fall Unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). The unit began the week of September 13, 2010, and concluded in December. This is the first unit offered by NGMC as a new Provisional Candidacy Accredited Training Center with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).
CPE is a clinical theological training experience for clergy that consists of classes focused on pastoral care, classes led by clinical team members in the hospital, ministry reflection seminars, individual and group supervision and at least 18 hours of ministry at the NGMC's inpatient hospital, long term care centers, Laurelwood and the chaplains' parishes. This graduate level education is for ministers who want to learn more about pastoral care in an institutional setting.
"The heart of this educational experience is the student's ministry with people and learning from that ministry through reflection, discussion and evaluation with other students and their educational supervisor," says Jeff Thompson, the full-time chaplain at NGMC. "CPE offers students an opportunity to explore God's presence both in their lives and in the lives of those they minister with."
