Recycling Christmas trash, trees

By Staff
UNDATED - If you just absolutely have to have the Christmas down and out the door by the end of the big day, here's a way to dispose of it... if its anything other than an artificial tree: donate it to the Bring One for the Chipper program. And, some palces are also urging you to recycle other Christmas trash.

Several county governments in the Gainesville area are again participating this year... some of then as early as the day after Christmas but some not until after New Year's Day.

Such is the case in Dawson County where people can leave their trees at the Dawson County Transfer Station and Recycling Center located at 946 Burt Creek Road the week of January 2 - 9 during regular business hours. In addition, Keep Dawson County Beautiful is partnering with Home Depot which will serve as a drop-off site but for Saturday January 9 only and between 10:00 and 2:00 only.

"The program successfully transforms Chipper trees into mulch for playgrounds, public beautification projects, wildlife habitat and homeowner landscaping projects," said Keep Dawson County Beautiful Executive Director Cathy Brooks. "Since 1991 Bring One for the Chipper has collected over five million trees. This year Dawson County residents may pick up free Christmas tree mulch for their own projects from the transfer station beginning Tuesday, January 12 while supply lasts."

HALL COUNTY

In Hall County, Resource Recovery Director Rick Foote says they'll begin taking trees at all county trash compactor sites and at the recycling center on Chesnut Street on Saturday. Foote said trees can be left at the recycling center "24/7" but at the compactor sites only during the hours they are open. January 9 is the official state kick-off of the program this year and it's on that date each year that free tree seedlings are handed out in exchange for recycled Christmas trees but Foote says this year because of state budget cuts, the seedlings will not be available.

Non-metallic wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and paper gift bags are also welcome at the Recycling Center, Foote said. â
