STONE MOUNTAIN - A Stone Mountain park attendant who was a retired police officer was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning at the park.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said robbery was the apparent motive in the shooting of Anita Redmond, 63, a 30-year veteran of the Doraville police department who began working for the park in April.

``We've never had anything like this happen in the history of the park,'' said Stone Mountain park spokeswoman Christine Parker.

Bankhead said the GBI is assisting Stone Mountain park police in the investigation.

Bankhead says the shooting occurred at shortly after midnight at the west gate entrance.

``We've been canvassing the neighborhood to see if anyone saw anything unusual between 12:30 and 1:30 this morning,'' Bankhead said.

Parker said Parker's job as an attendant was to collect $8 park fees for vehicles which do not have parking stickers for the park.

``We're saddened by the loss,'' Parker said. ``She was very much liked by her co-workers and will be greatly missed.''

Parker said Redmond's brother, Nick Bird, is a policeman at Stone Mountain park.
