Oliver would support holding liquor referendum

GAINESVILLE - Hall countians may get a chance to vote next year on whether to allow the sale of liquor-by-the-drink in unincorporated parts of the county.

County commission chairman Tom Oliver confirmed Thursday morning that the commission is likely to discuss holding a referendum on the same day as the November General Election.

Oliver said he would not campaign either way on liquor by the drink in the county but would support holding the referendum to let the voters decide. "I would not campaign either way for the vote but I feel comfortable supporting the call for the question," Oliver said.

Liquor by the drink sales are already legal in three municipalities in the county - Gainesville, Flowery Branch, Oakwood, Braselton and Buford - but not elsewhere in the county, including the other towns.

Oliver called Hall County an island, surrounded by cities and counties that are drawing revenue from liquor by the drink.

"We're seeing a lot of growth out of Buford and out of Braselton that's putting challenges on the quality of development we're seeing in this community," Oliver said.

It has been several years since the last liquor-by-the-drink referendum in the county.
