Book on history of Gainesville blacks published

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The daily lives of African-American residents in Hall County are recorded in a newly published pictorial history by Linda Hutchens and Ella Jean Smith, both of Gainesville.

"Hall County, Georgia" is one of the most recent publications from the Arcadia Press Black America Series of pictorial histories.

It is a retrospective photographic album - a glimpse of the past, featuring an array of churches, schools, businesses, and outstanding leaders in the African-American community.

Linda Rucker Hutchens, a retired Gainesville Middle School teacher, and Ella J. Wilmot Smith, a Hall County Library technician, serve as the president and vice-president, respectively, of the Hall County Black History Society. Their recount of the heritage of African Americans in Hall County is a delightful pictorial journey that takes readers from the late 1880s to the late 1970s.

The book evolved from the efforts of the newly formed Hall County Black History Society as the group began to work to collect, record, and host a collection of photographs through the Hall County Library's historical photograph project Web site. Hutchens and Smith says they were so impressed with the collection, and considering the success of other local history photo books, the two realized that a book could easily develop.

A book signing is scheduled with the authors for Sunday, August 29 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Headquarters Branch of the Hall County Library.

The book is available now for purchase at the Headquarters Branch, Hall County Library for $20.00. Mail orders may be requested from the Hall County Library, 127 Main Street NW, Gainesville, Georgia 30501 with an additional charge of $3.00 for shipping and handling.

Smith said proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Hall County Black History Society.
