Road rage victim to be buried Sunday

CLEVELAND - The White County man who was the innocent victim of an apparent act of road rage on I-985 Wednesday will be buried this weekend.

Jim Freeman, 37, of Cleveland, who died Thursday, was the father of three including a two-week-old daughter.

Described by a friend as a "hardworking guy who did all he could to take care of his family," Freeman worked for a road resurfacing company.

His funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church.

Meanwhile, police continue to search for a van driver believed to have caused the accident.

The white van sped away from a series of collisions Wednesday afternoon on I-985, including the one that fatally injured Freeman.

The van driver faces a homicide charge.

Witnesses said the van and a car traveling south on I-985 around 5:00 Wednesday afternoon began pulling in front of each other and slamming on their brakes. As the vehicles neared Ga. 20, the driver of the van suddenly applied his brakes and was struck by the other car, driven by Geraldo Gonzalez, which crossed the median into the northbound lanes and crashed into Freeman's pickup and another truck.

The driver of the other truck was also injured.

Gonzalez, 23, was charged with vehicular homicide, aggressive driving, reckless driving, following too closely and driving without a valid license, Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Wayne Thaxton said.

A woman told police the van had a ``Marietta Truck Sales'' drive-out tag with an expiration date of 8-11-04.
