Judge: Trial for suspect in 1985 double-murder to be this year

By
BRUNSWICK - The trial of a man charged in the 1985 shooting deaths of an elderly couple at a southeast Georgia church will be held this year.

Dennis Arnold Perry, 40, was charged with murder in January 2000 in the 1985 deaths of Harold and Thelma Swain during a Bible study class at Rising Daughter Baptist Church in Camden County.

Perry was among the suspects questioned after the shootings, but investigators said there was insufficient evidence to file charges. The case was reopened about three years ago.

A trial date hasn't been set yet because defense attorneys and prosecutors are still sharing evidence, said John Johnson, the lead prosecutor in the case. A trial date will be set after all evidence has been shared, Superior Court Judge Amanda Williams said Thursday.

Perry's family said he is innocent and was working in Atlanta when the shootings occurred. They say a lab test shows DNA evidence taken from the scene does not match Perry.
